Ice Cream Club!

Knock. Knock. ICE CREAM CLUB! My smarty pants friend suggested that I should start an ice cream of the month club and it peeked my interest. I’m not a monthly member of anything except for paying my cable bill (damn Real Housewives addiction). However, I am a fan of making ice cream and especially seasonal flavors. Here’s what I’m thinking…

Of course I’m not going to leave you hangin’…

club starter kit

Each member will receive a starter kit including sprinkles, cones, spoon, pint of ice cream (for that month) and official badge/magnet.

Every month you will receive one pint of ice cream, some other experiments I’m working on and various (random/fun) ice cream related items. From pre-postaged postcards to ice cream erasers and fun contests…this club is going to be like your grammy’s bingo club ON A SUGAR HIGH.

American Bites

Fireworks, hot dogs, burgers, DORITOS, eagle graphic tank tops…it’s almost 4th of July…bring these to your bbq!

Blue Graham

‘Tis the season for those little bundles of blue bites of berry. (yeah that’s right I just typed that) Blueberries are great, they are so mysterious…they have this semi-thick  blue/violet skin that pretends to be tough but inside they have this clear-ish mild filling gel.

blueberry x-ray

I made blueberry ice cream last year but was still getting down the whole texture thing so I wanted to try it again this year with a few modifications. The first being obviously the vanilla beans I’m obsessed with it,  some lemon, and GRAHAM CRACKERS. Cinnamon and blueberries are a great combo so I opted for the “cinnamon” variety of graham crackers and had a blast eating them along the way. They are like slabs of edible sand paper that carves a nice nestled spot of delicious on your taste buds. (wow I am wordy today).

Fact: Loved this. I brought it into work and my cubicle friends really like it as well..perfect for a semi-summer day in SF. The key to making anything with fruit is to make sure it’s fresh and this was indeed a fresh group of blueberry pearls.

Bastani Jan

Da who? “Bastani” means ice cream in Farsi and “Jan” is used when referring to a friend or someone you care for, so if your friend’s name is Pickles and you adore her, then she would would be Pickles Jan. (If you have a friend  named “Jan” then she is DOUBLE AWESOME.) How do I know all this? Did I live in Iran for a decade? Maybs. NOT! My dear friend at work is Persian and he taught me a thing or two and since this ice cream was for him, I figured I would name is something meaningful.

Afshin Jan brought in Persian ice cream to work once and then I had it at a restaurant and liked it very much. It’s extremely unique in flavor, much like Persian cuisine which I am a huge fan of. There are three major ingredients that make up Persian ice cream: saffron, rose water and pistachios. But before we get there we need to talk about texture because I don’t leave home without it. Bastani is MEGA creamy and smooth so don’t expect it to hang around for awhile in that cone or dish of yours. This sucker is on a mission to get to know your taste buds and is not playing  hard to get. Let us begin with the essentials…

saffron mugshot

I never really had much saffron in my life, but me oh my am I excited about it. It’s a really rare spice that only yields a limited amount of “threads” which is the other form it takes, hence why it’s a hot commodity and so pricey. I opted for powder because in this form it’s simple to mix vs. the threads which need to be seeped in order to release their flavor. Just to confirm, you aren’t crazy…what you see above is a deep maroon color…in a couple of minutes you will see something completely different in color. My sous chef is a unicorn and is about to perform some magic…

rose water mugshot

The next ingredient is rose water which is a really strong flavor and usually what you taste the most in Persian ice cream. It’s extremely flavorful and you feel like you are sitting in a bed of roses when a large gust of wind comes in and delicately places a few petals on your tongue as you unassumingly yawn/stretch.  Get the picture?

pistachio mouth

This guy is clearly singing:

Nothing really much more to say than that.

I did add egg yolks because I wanted the texture true to form…CREAMY MANIA. This is how we did…

Bastani-Jan

I actually don’t think this photo does it justice…this thing WAS YELLOW. (Like Coldplay “yellow”). As mentioned earlier, my unicorn sous chef wiggled its horn and cracked its knuckles and voila…maroon powder turns into bright yellow! I really enjoyed this one…though next time I might tone down the rose water and let the saffron play in the sun a bit more. Afshin Jan loved the surprise which made it even better!

Spiked Strawberry Bites

Yep. I did. I truly turned into 5 years old with this one. Well minus the whole alcohol part. Strawberries are  in season and I wanted to take full advantage so I picked up some of nature’s edible armor. Strawberries look like they are always ready to battle with their chain link pattern of seeds, but this guy was no match for what I had in store for it…I got it drunk.

tough guy was no match for the blender either…

strawberry guts

After a quick trip to the blender, I took the strawberry guts for a night on the town…we painted the town red..[hardy har har...lame joke].  I was ordering strawberry guts shots of this wonderful whipped cream vodka that absolutely tastes like whipped cream, it’s light with a subtle vanilla flavor. I then threw strawberry guts a party and put on their most special birthday suit…SPRINKLES!

I had leftover Lemonilla and mixed some of that into a handful of the bites..and me oh my what a combo! Here are the parental units of that pairing…

ForageSF – May

If 5/21 was Rapture Day than I hope it’s an annual event! Not only was it an amazing day weather wise here in SF but ForageSF was  happening which took the “demise of life” to a tasty unforgettable level.

This time Forage was at Public Works which is a nighclub-ish venue that has two levels of fun. I LOVE THIS SPACE.  It definitely provided vendors more space to spread out and felt less cramped for attendees too because they could roam at the pace they felt most comfortable. How did I work with the space? With 3 coolers, 3 scoops, a 2-foot ice cream lamp, sprinkles, 120 mini cones, menus and more…here’s how things looked:

Let’s cut to the chase…what was on the menu?

Menu

The culprits:

Flavors

The hot seller which I sold out of  at the end was Candied Violet. I actually had a cool guy come up to me at the end and say he came to Forage just to try out candied violet because he was from Sweeden where violet flavors are much more popular and wanted a taste. UMMMMMM AWESOME!!!!

This time at Forage I paid more attention to the feelings and observations I had than my first time which I was more concerned about process and the dry ice situation. Going in I had a few goals, soak it all in more, make it fun, and try an relax as much as possible. I think I achieved  most of these but the third one is a tricky one for me because when I focus on something I can’t really stop, I was definitely more relaxed this time time because I  conquered the dry ice situation.

Soaking it all in was amazing and the thing I will remember the most. Some of my favorites: people taking pictures with the ice cream lamp,  chuckles at the menu where it says “calories: meh”, the mom who was so appreciative I gave her a cup of sprinkles to bring to her son who was waiting outside, the guy who told me he hasn’t had Nilla wafers since he was a kid, the folks that came back for seconds, the satisfaction from others that made me squirm with excitement, and of course most of all, my amazing support team, my friends. Each friend who showed up is a sprinkle on my ultimate ice cream cone and my life would never taste as good if it wasn’t for each one of them. Special thanks goes to Tricia who brought me much needed spoons, LK who also brought me much needed spoons, Mike & Mary for being troopers and stayed until the end and watched me spill ice cream water all over the table, Stef for organizing the $$ so I wasn’t throwing it everywhere, and of course Irene who helped me from set up to when her feet wore out.

My work friends showing support!

Can’t really sum up in words how I feel right now but this song does a good job at filling in the blank.

Happy @ Forage

ForageSF May Event!

As you can see, I am very excited to be part of ForageSF again!

Lemonilla

I’m naming this one “Lemonilla” because it’s like a nice dinosaur that roams your mouth and leaves a large refreshing footprint. (If T-Rex knew about this ice cream, he would have been a lot nicer and less roar-y.) Still loving springtime, I wanted to pay homage to mother nature for her simple goodie bag treats, lemons and vanilla.

Lemonilla Face

It’s a basic vanilla bean base with fresh lemon juice and creamy like the milky way…

Lemonilla: a stand up citizen

What I like the most about this flavor is how calming it is, it tastes like a breezy Sunday afternoon, free of stress, responsibilities and agendas. The lemon isn’t there to startle you because the vanilla has a giant bear hug on it and the two are just swinging in the breeze. They get along so well they made baby lemonillas on top of mini nilla wafer cookies…

Lemonilla Bites

The flavor doesn’t go extinct which is my favorite part, it lingers for awhile reminding you to relax. Sign.me.up.

The Elka

The what? No I did not add elk or a Scandinavian girl to my ice cream. “The Elka” is named after my friend from work who requested this flavor as part of her last day at work. (Her name is actually not “Elka” at all but that’s just what we call her.)

Elka LOVES bananas. If I were corny I would say she goes bananas over bananas, ew. Anyway she eats one every morning and as we all know the laws of physics, when one eats a banana, one gets banana voice. “Banana voice?” Yes.

Definition of Banana Voice

Elka  had banana voice… EVERYDAY. So clearly she was going to choose banana flavor ice cream. I’m not a big banana fan at all so I let her run with it, she suggested “Lis! What about banana with peanut butter cookie dough and marshmallow!” Ok, that’ll do.

Banana Giraffe Neck

Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Mugshot

I was pleasantly surprised on how this turned out. Frozen bananas are quite appealing, unlike their raw mushy and smelly counterpart.  Bananas when mushed up are very thick and added a nice texture to the base pre-freezing. The result…banana drumroll please…..
